Alan Cunningham, DLA PiperAlan Cunningham, a UK lawyer specialising in business jet transactions, has joined DLA Piper the international law firm. He joins from DWF a UK regional firm.

“I am very excited about the opportunities at DLA Piper,” says Cunningham. “About 80% of the transactions we work on are cross-border.  DLA is the largest law firm in the world so has a fantastic international platform which means we can involve our foreign offices. It is also recognised by many bank panels and it has a great corporate client base finally so it is very exciting to be able to work with leading tax, litigation and corporate lawyers.”

Cunningham has a wide practice including lenders, corporates, high-net worth individuals, operators and aircraft traders.

“I first came across Alan around 2004 when I was working for Lombard, and he was working for an aircraft buyer. He did a great job, was very commercial and pragmatic and helped to get a very tricky deal done,” says Brendan Lodge, business development director, JetBrokers Europe and former head of corporate jet finance at Lombard and Kaupthing. “Since then I have instructed Alan on many occasions and together he and I have worked on aviation lending and purchases in many diverse jurisdictions and running into hundreds of millions of dollars.”

Another client says: “Alan takes a pragmatic approach and is definitely willing to go the extra mile, but always with a focus on getting the deal done.”

Cunningham started his asset finance career at Harbottle & Lewis, attracted by its relationship with Virgin Atlantic, before moving to Richards Butler in Hong Kong. He then worked for Norton Rose in Paris before joining DWF in Manchester, in the north of England. He will work from DLA’s London and Manchester offices.

“We rate Alan highly and think the move to DLA will suit him well,” says one rival lawyer. “We are always happy to act on the other side of the table.”
