Rockwell Collins has become the first company to enable high-definition and high-compression video programming to business and VIP aircraft cabins.

The company announced that the upgrades are now available on its Tailwind 500 and 550 Multi-region in-flight Direct Broadcast Satellite TV systems.

“Adding live HD programming to the cabin will enrich the passenger experience and resemble what has become the norm in many homes,” said Steve Timm, vice president and general manager, Flight Information Solutions for Rockwell Collins.

The addition of HD and MPEG-4 video enables hundreds of additional channels in the cabin.

Rockwell Collins’ Tailwind with HD and MPEG-4 capability will be an option for new aircraft and available as an upgrade to fielded beginning in mid-2013.
