Aviation services firm Avflight has cut the ribbon on a new fixed-base operator complex at Detroit’s Coleman A. Young International Airport.

The ceremony on June 3 was attended by Detroit Mayor Mary Sheffield, airport director Jason Watt and Avflight senior vice president of operations Joe Meszaros. The new complex features a 5,000sqft FBO terminal, a 20,000sqft heated hangar capable of accommodating aircraft up to a Gulfstream G700, and an attached heated indoor parking garage.

The new building replaces a 1950s-vintage terminal that had served as Avflight’s base of operations at the airport.

The opening is part of a wider transformation underway at KDET. City-led improvements include a $3.5m runway renovation, LED taxi lighting upgrades, ramp pavement improvements and a new engineered material arresting system.

A new control tower is also planned in partnership with the FAA.

Avflight has operated at KDET since 2011, expanding its footprint gradually before securing the funding and planning approvals needed for the new build.
