Bombardier Learjet 75

A buyer’s guide to the Bombardier Learjet 75 range of light business jets from the Canadian manufacturer.

Pros

The Learjet 75 is a quick aircraft with impressive range for a light jet. Combine this with its relatively large cabin and the Learjet 75 starts to tick all the right performance boxes.

Cons

It is expensive to buy and operate. Weak sales figures would seem to indicate buyer’s resistance at the $13.8 million list price.

Flying

The Learjet 75 is an upgrade from the Learjet 45 and 45XR – a highly successful model range with 248 delivered in total. The upgrades include canted winglets (also seen on the Bombardier 7000) to reduce drag alongside a reduction in weight – equating to an extra 4% in range over its predecessor.

As such, the aircraft can fly 2,040nm (3,778km) – meaning passengers can fly from Los Angeles to Washington D.C, London to St. Petersburg or Hong Kong to New Delhi, all without needing to refuel – a respectable distance for a light jet.

When not needing to utilise its full range, the Learjet 75 is capable of cruising at Mach 0.81 (534mph/860kph) – making it the one of the quickest light jets available (the fastest being the Syber Jet SJ30).

A maximum operating altitude of 51,000ft allows the Learjet 75 to fly over both commercial traffic and bad weather, allowing a more direct and efficient route to be flown.

Event Partner

Bombardier

Headquartered in Montreal, Canada, and with operations in Mexico, Morocco, United Kingdom, United States and Canada, Bombardier boasts a strong heritage and visionary innovation dating back to the start of civil aviation -- spanning some 110 years -- and is recognized globally as a leader in the design, manufacturing and support of both business jets and commercial airliners. The acquisition of Canadair in 1986 was the first of several strategic moves that would see Bombardier consolidate leading aircraft design and manufacturing experience from around the world. In the following six years, Bombardier grew in strength and stature by acquiring in 1989 the world’s first aircraft production company -- Northern Irelandbased Short Brothers -- followed by Learjet of Wichita, USA, in 1990, and de Havilland Canada in 1992.

Bombardier Business Aircraft currently offers the broadest portfolio of business jets with its popular Learjet*, Challenger* and Global* aircraft families. In their respective segments, the Learjet 70* and Learjet 75* aircraft feature superior cruise speeds, high climb rates and operating ceilings, and competitive operating costs. In the medium category, the class-defining Challenger 350* and the Challenger 650* offer industry-leading cabin design and amenities as well as performance and reliability attributes synonymous with the Challenger family.

The Global* long-range aircraft family -- featuring Bombardier’s unmatched smooth ride technology – is recognized globally for its range, speed and cabin comfort. On Dec 20, 2018 -- following type certification by Transport Canada and the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration, Bombardier celebrated the entry-intoservice of its pioneering Global 7500. The only purpose-built, four-compartment cabin specifically designed to deliver uncompromising levels of range, speed and cabin comfort, the Global 7500 establishes a new standard in business aviation – which it has amply demonstrated in 2019 by setting several stunning world records and generating tremendous interest throughout its global introductory.

Bombardier supports operators globally through a network of field service personnel and a combination of wholly owned and authorized MRO facilities. This global network also includes 24/7 customer response centers, mobile parts delivery services and spare parts depots. On Feb 26, 2019, Bombardier announced another wave of MRO growth with a massive expansion of its Singapore Service Center, that will more than quadruple its current footprint from 100,000 sq. ft. to approximately 430,000 sq. ft. by 2020. Additionally, a new 300,000-sq-ft service center at Miami-Opa Locka Executive Airport will be operational in 2020, following on newly operational Bombardier service centers in Biggin Hill, U.K., and in Tianjin, China.

2-Reg

The States of Guernsey is a British Crown Dependency, independent from the United Kingdom and outside the European Union. The Registry features a unique set-up, where SGI Guernsey is acting as a service provider for the Guernsey Registrar and DCA. All of the day to day activities are performed by SGIG under the supervision of the DCA & Registrar. This set up allows SGIG to act with a commercial mindset within the strict requirements and boundaries required by the DCA & Registrar. The Aircraft nationality mark for Guernsey is ‘2’, hence brand name ‘2-REG’. 2-REG is not part of the EU and therefore not bound by EASA regulations but nonetheless is an ICAO based registry. Aircraft, engines and lease agreements can be registered under 2-REG, which is ratified by the Cape Town Convention and recognised by all major national authority registries. 2-REG validates TCDS issued by EASA, FAA, CAAC and ANAC. Aircraft registered on 2-REG do not need physical presence in Guernsey and the owner does not need to have a company in Guernsey when the aircraft are used for private operations.

The first aircraft was registered on 2-REG in December 2013. Since 2015, Guernsey legislation has been extended to allow 2-REG to issue AOCs. As of the beginning of April 2019, 6 AOC certificates had been issued and more than 460 aircraft had been registered.

2-REG has achieved a solid name within the leasing industry, where three out of the top five leasing companies are recurrent customers. Lessor friendly features include;

 A tailored register for aircraft lessors in urgent need of a temporary register for a ferry flight, aircraft in storage or in case of repossession
 2-REG is open for registration of aircraft that are in between leases
 Owner-oriented
 ‘Can-do’ attitude, with 24/7 accessibility
 Competitive fees and charges
 Airworthiness surveyors strategically located across the globe
 All aircraft leaving the 2-REG successfully exported to a next authority without any issue
 Quick registration and de-registration processes

Travelling

No one buys a light jet to have a big cabin, but a flat floor in the Learjet 75 markedly improves the cabin size and comfort for a small jet. The cabin itself is 5ft 1in wide and 4ft 11in high, in line with the largest cabins in the light jet market.

In the standard executive layout, the cabin can be configured to seat up to nine passengers with two sets of double club seating and a belted lavatory. The club-configured seats are rotatable and reclinable to increase passenger comfort.

Inside the cabin, the Learjet 75 features a lavatory, six pop-up monitors with access to entertainment and the cabin management system, as well as access to high-speed Internet.

(Photo: Bombardier)

In terms of storage, the Learjet 75 has 65cu.ft of luggage space, with 15cu.ft of this being accessible inflight. In total, the aircraft can carry approximately six golf bags, seven suitcases and four carry-on bags.

There is also a small galley area, with two ice drawers and a microwave – a feature most light jets do not have.

In the cockpit, the Learjet 75 features a Garmin 5000 flight deck and a synthetic vision system – reducing pilot workload and overall increasing safety.

Owning

List price for a new Learjet 75 is $13.8 million – making it significantly more expensive than other options in the market. Since the first deliveries of the Learjet 75, competitors such as Embraer have released upgraded versions of their light jets, whilst Bombardier has left the Learjet 75 untouched. Being left behind the times somewhat, new sales of the Learjet 75 have struggled recently. In 2017, only 14 Learjet 75’s were delivered – a worryingly low number considering Embraer delivered 54 Phenom 300s in the same time period. It is likely that ordering a new Learjet 75 could be negotiated to a heavy discount to the list price.

In terms of the pre-owned market, data from AMSTAT shows the average asking price in March 2018 was $6.7 million, with 3.7% (4 aircraft) of the active fleet available for sale. The average time spent on the market before being sold is 179 days.

The average age of the available aircraft on the pre-owned market is 2014, meaning that the average Learjet 75 is worth 49% of the list price of a new aircraft. This equates to an average yearly depreciation rate of 12.5%, slightly higher than the industry benchmark of 10% per year (assuming the aircraft was purchased at list price). This is good news for pre-owned buyers, but be wary of a continuation of such a depreciation rate.

Of the global active fleet, 83 aircraft are located in North America, 16 in South/Central America, 5 in Western Europe; with Asia, Eastern Europe and MEA each being home to only one aircraft each.

The Learjet 75 will cost $1,903 per hour to operate, according to data from Conklin and de Decker. This is a few hundred dollars more than competitors such as the Phenom 300 and Citation CJ3+. This is in part due to the speed of the aircraft, as this will increase fuel consumption.

Fixed costs for the year will be $325,425, with this cost covering non-flight hour dependant costs, such as crew salaries and training, insurance and hangarage costs.
