It’s not just celebrities and people you went to college with who are getting in on the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, business aviation companies are also raising money for the cause.

The Globe Air team take-on the ice bucket challenge in front of a Citation Mustang.

Unless you’ve been trapped on a desert island without a phone or internet connection, we’re sure that you will have come across the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge several times already in the past few weeks.

Perhaps you’ve even done it yourself, or know somebody else that has. It’s the craze that’s swept around the world faster that somebody running away after a dousing in cold icy water – and it’s being done by everybody from your favourite celebrities to your least favourite politicians (possibly even your mother).

The awareness and fund raising campaign was started in the US to support research into a disease called Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), a motor neurone disease that kills between 5,000 and 6,000 people each year in the US alone.

To take part in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, you first have to be nominated by somebody. Once nominated you, have 24 hours to film yourself being covered in icy water or give money to the charity.

Once completed, you then have to nominate three other people who have 24 hours to complete the challenge – and the cycle continues.

Below we round up some of our favourites from the business aviation industry. Don’t forget to check back from time to time to see if we’ve added any more (and make sure you vote for your favourite video at the bottom of the page).

GlobeAir

GlobeAir’s Ice Bucket Challenge is one of our favourites, as it shows a cunning use of the surroundings to get the maximum effect. We won’t give away the method used for the dousing, you’ll have to watch the video to find out.

Chairman and CEO Bernghard Fragner told Corporate Jet Investor: “The GlobeAir Team and myself took the challenge of the Ice Bucket Challenge with great excitement and enthusiasm, conscious that with a little action we could have raised awareness of the neurodegenerative Lou Gehrig’s disease, also known as ALS.

“The impact of this initiative has been really positive, we have received great feedback from our stakeholders and many views on social media across different channels. To express our gratitude to the exposure that the viral social fundraising campaign gave us, donating to the ALS was the least we could do.”

PrivateFly

PrivateFly’s Adam Twidell, looking as dapper as always in his pilot’s uniform, could possibly accused of cheating at the beginning by using an umbrella – To be fair, we checked and there’s nothing in the rules to state that the use of an umbrella is outlawed, and to be doubly fair we do see him making a donation. Make sure you watch the clip all the way through though to see him get his comeuppance at the end.

Adam told Corporate Jet Investor that “taking part in the ice bucket challenge was something we welcomed on a number of levels: first and foremost to support the fight against Motor Neurone disease, secondly to show that business aviation companies can have fun too (and get involved in a widespread social marketing campaign); thirdly because we were nominated by GlobeAir, so had no choice!”

London Executive Aviation

London Executive Aviation (LEA) took the opportunity to do their Ice Bucket Challenge in front of one of their own aircraft. Nothing wrong with that we say, always good to have an aircraft in the frame.

Just in case you missed the first close-up shot, we then get a glorious slow motion shot from distance, showing that not only did the water come from the side, but it also came from above as well. But it’s the slow down screams on the slow motion reply that really got us.

Patrick Margetson-Rushmore, chief executive of London Executive Aviation, says: “Having been nominated by PrivateFly, the LEA team was very pleased to take up the Challenge. As well as the undoubted pleasure of passing on chilly discomfort to friends and competitors, it is great to help raise awareness for such a worthwhile cause. It is a very positive domino effect across our industry.”

Starbase Jet

One of the better produced video’s that we’ve seen so far, and another great example of using the surroundings to ensure maximum effect.

We were particularly pleased to see the Starbase Jet Dallas team nominate their counterparts at Starbase Jet Houston to take the challenge next. We say that’s a real example of team building, of sharing an experience. Either that or they just want them to get cold and wet.

Starbase Jet’s Luis Barros told us that “Starbase Jet was eager to help in the effort to raise awareness and funds for ALS. Coupled with the opportunity to increase our donation through another involved company in the charter industry, it was a pleasure for our sales executives to participate!”

Victor

Victor’s Clive Jackson looks a little bit too relaxed in his Ice Bucket Challenge. Until the moment he see’s the ice cold water heading for him.

Out of all the videos we’ve seen, Clive’s is the only one that’s shot on a boat on water, so we applaud him for not only taking the challenge, but also for thinking about the environment.

Steve Varsano (The Jet Business)

If there was one Ice Bucket Challenge we were really looking forward to here at Corporate Jet Investor, it was Steve Varsano from The Jet Business, London’s first ever private jet showroom. Call us slightly cruel if you will, but we would have loved to see the normally immaculately turned out Varsano doused with a full bucket of ice and water. Or maybe two.

So imagine our disappointment when we saw that Varsano had traded his usual three-piece suit for a pair of shorts and a t-shirt. That’s not to say that it’s not worth watching though, especially as the bucket seems to have the highest concentration of ice cubes that we’ve seen so far.

Varsano said: “It is a very worthy cause that adds a little fun twist that brings awareness to an otherwise ignored disease. Hopefully, everyone still makes a donation instead of completing the challenge and not remembering to make the actual donation”
