Global 7500 flies London City to Los Angeles non-stop


Bombardier recently flew one of its Global 7500 business jets non-stop between London City Airport and Los Angeles.

It was the first time that a private jet has flown directly between the two airports.

“Welcoming the Bombardier Global 7500 aircraft to London City Airport for its flight test campaign is a crucial milestone towards certification and subsequent business jet operations at London’s most central airport,” said Gary Hodgetts, director of operations at London City Airport. “The flight completed by the Global 7500 FTV on May 10th is the longest flight ever out of London City and simply demonstrates the exceptional performance of the aircraft.”

Private jets have to be specially certified to be able to use London City Airport due to its short runway and steep approach path.

The Global 7500 was visiting the airport to complete its steep approach certification for Transport Canada, the Canadian transport authoritiy.

The trials were also part of the company’s efforts to gain certification for the Global 7500 to operate from the airport.

London City Airport’s approach path is 5.5 degrees, almost twice the standard 3 degrees of most other airports.

Bombardier used its fifth flight-test aircraft, MSN 70005 / C-GLBG, which it calls ‘The Masterpiece’. As the final flight-test aircraft, it was used to validate all previous tests and ensure that the aircraft had a smooth entry into service.

‘The Masterpiece’ used London’s Stansted Airport as a base whilst undertaking the trials at London City Airport. The aircraft arrived at Stansted directly from Bombardier’s flight-test centre in Wichita, Kansas.

Previously known as the Global 7000, the Global 7500 saw its first delivery taking place at the end of 2018.

There are currently two Global 7500s in service. The first aircraft was leased back immediately by Bombardier to use as a demonstration aircraft.

The second is registered in Austria as OE-IIL. Its owner is long term Bombardier Global customer Niki Lauda.
