Bob Zuskin, founder of aircraft appraisal firm Jet Perspectives, is retiring on his 70th birthday next week after 46 years in business aviation.

Zuskin started in aircraft sales in 1979 and became an aircraft appraiser in 1992 working for aviation consultancy AVITAS. He launched Jet Perspectives in 1999.

“As an appraiser, you always have a paper due. It is like you never graduated college,” he tells us. “Even when you go on holiday, you know you have papers due when you get back – it is always at the back of your mind.”

Jet Perspectives was highly regarded with a very loyal group of customers. Zuskin chose not to join an appraisal organisation, instead relying on his own reputation. “I always choose to go my own path,” he says.

Zuskin’s first job was at US Aircraft Sales after being introduced to business aviation by a friend of a friend. A few months later Steve Varsano, the founder of aircraft broker The Jet Business, joined. Varsano often talks about how scruffy he found his colleagues on his first job in aircraft sales. “I was one of the long-haired guys wearing sandals he often complains about,” says Zuskin. “Now I have short hair and wear Nikes.”

He plans to use his retirement to learn to play the piano and learn to speak Spanish.
